Composer's Note:
“Theo” is a tone poem centered around a truly miserable character of the same name. Theo is haunted by the memories of his poor choices, his failures, his loneliness, his self-loathing… One night, the thought of living a life simply stewing in this cycle self-hate becomes to much to bear. He suffers a break, tears from his home in an ill-fated attempt to simply outrun the echoes of his subconscious. Needless to say, they follow him. They follow him for miles. And, just as they are about to overtake him, he catches a glimpse of the ocean in the distance: the waves crashing on the rocks, the ebb and flow of the water. He continues to run, but no longer away from something, toward something. That beauty fills him with a sense of relief. Each pounding footstep brings him closer to something, anything but this din of misery – until he no longer feels the ground beneath him. He hangs motionless in the air for a moment, suspended in time, and the din slowly subsides. As he falls slowly toward the waves softly crashing below, he is filled with a sense of relief. But, it is felt for only a moment before he himself is quieted, eternally.
