It’s also about life, death, grief, and the seasons. The cycle explores how we seek meaning in the events of the natural world, and it questions whether the meaning we find there is actually present, or something we impose in our desire to find meaning there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Cold Pane\u003c\/em\u003e sets five poems by the esteemed Kentucky author, farmer, activist, and scholar Wendell Berry. The cycle alternates between poems that describe the natural world, and, particularly, the seasons, and poems that describe the human, emotional world of grief. This opposition between external and internal worlds carries with it several other related oppositions—cyclical versus linear time, light versus darkness, life versus death, and objectivity versus subjectivity. In order to reflect these oppositions, I composed the songs dealing with the natural world according to more-or-less strict processes—systems that, once set in motion, operate according to their own internal logic, without adjustment or interference on my part. In contrast, for the songs dealing with the internal, emotional world—“The Cold Pane,” and “The Widower”—I wrote in a much more intuitive, spontaneous, and traditionally lyrical mode. “The Widower,” on a personal level, describes the experience my father had after my mother passed away, and it was with this poem that I began to build a cycle. The work’s tonal structure also reflects the oppositions embedded in the song texts through an oscillation between the two tonal centers of G-sharp minor and A major. This tonal relationship intentionally references the similar harmonic plan of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony—a piece that has a very special place in my heart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece’s unusual instrumentation grew out of two desires: first, to create an ensemble in which all the performers could stand; and second, to reference, but not explicitly duplicate, the instrumentation of the bluegrass band—a sound world and singing style that has been a major source of inspiration for me. Previous works of mine have drawn inspiration from certain folk singing traditions from Kentucky—particularly, Appalachian ballad singing and Old Regular Baptist hymnody. The influence of these traditions is less prevalent here, though the folk-wisdom quality of the words for Berry’s “The Cold Pane” did invite hymn-like sounds into the piece, albeit briefly. Puebloans lived here for thousands of years, followed by the Navajo (Diné), the Spanish then Mexicans, and finally the Americans. I've found myself pondering how they all saw the same Land of Enchantment and how some must have gotten along and even fallen in love.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNew Mexico's state bird, the roadrunner, has a universal and positive appeal for almost all of the cultures that intermingled there. Roadrunners are beautiful, athletic, fearless, and mysterious. They notably have four toes and nearly symmetrical feet, with two toes facing forward and two facing backward. The concept of symmetrical groupings of four is paramount. The triad with both a major and minor third plays an outsize role in all movements since it holds two major thirds and two minor thirds as a palindrome (C E Eb G). The triad in inversion, as Bartók was obsessed with, makes appearances as well for its symmetry (E G C Eb). Augmented harmony and triad shapes (C E Ab C) perfectly divide an octave into four units, and this material is woven throughout. The piece goes in reverse chronological order of the people who arrived.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe first movement, “Chaparral Bird\", is about the Americans heading West. Their primary concern was getting lost and their superstition was that the roadrunner would lead them back to the trail. It's about wading into the unknown and finding your way again.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe second movement, \"El Correcaminos\", is primarily about the Mexicans who arrived (influenced by the Spanish) from the South (and somewhat the West) in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were looking to settle permanently, and saw el correcaminos as a fertility blessing like a stork. They were elated to see one, as it meant there was a future in this place.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe third movement, \"Tadai\", takes its name from the O'odham Language, one of the many Uto- Aztecan languages. The Hopi, one of the diverse groups of Puebloans in the Southwest (who speak a language in this family called Hopi), believed that the roadrunner could protect against evil spirits. The symmetrical feet could conceal which direction the bird was headed, making them difficult to track. This movement uses symmetrical structures that are constantly rotating and breaking. The piece feels repetitive, but never exactly repeats itself.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe fourth movement, \"Cyx\", is how I imagine the roadrunner thinks of itself. The name comes from the scientific name for roadrunner, \"Geococcyx.\" As a child I would see how close I could get to one, and then I'd find myself retreating as I realized the bird was not about to cede ground to me, a creature it has survived and lived alongside for thousands of years. Upon closer inspection, it becomes obvious that each\u003cbr\u003eindividual unit is actually a piece of foil from a liquor bottle. The style of weaving is inspired by kente, a traditional Asante or Ewe cloth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEl Anatsui insists that this isn't necessarily African art, it's human art, as geographically based genres box in the potential impact of a work. Consumption and obsolescence are common to all cultures. I\u003cbr\u003edecided to recycle fragments of pieces and sounds that have been bouncing around in my head for years, some are obvious, and some not so obvious, but altogether I think this “analog sampling” creates a work that is entirely new. The book takes its name from a poem written in the early 20th century by George Sterling, \"The Cool, Grey City of Love.\" The fascination with San Francisco has been a reliable constant.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe book is equal parts adventure, history lesson, and memoir. Pretty soon I found myself wanting to stray from his suggested locations and find those of my own. It amazed me that the city maintains hundreds of tiny plots of land for public use. Some are meticulously maintained parks, others are natural preserves, and others still are utilitarian staircases that allow people to move between streets faster than cars would allow. Many of these locations are no bigger than a suburban front yard, and it was clear to me that these locations are by and for locals. I decided to focus on encouraging my fellow residents to get up and explore. Golden Gate Park and Dolores Park are lovely, but what about the Corwin Community Garden with its native flora, Ina Coolbrith with its stunning view, or Saturn Street Steps with its resident cat Buzz Saturn? These places are personal and enchanting, and most San Franciscans miss out on this explorer's dream.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe work is intended to be presented alongside video projections and audio taken from the local parks, and the goal is to encourage viewers to find their own slices of paradise. It's something that's inherent to a small, packed city with lots of walking paths. We can't all have yards, so we have parks that we share.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSan Francisco has its problems: gentrification disproportionally affects the poor and minorities, the rising cost of living and propensity for technocrats to keep to themselves means the arts are becoming a thing of the elite, and the city is becoming increasingly homogenous in ethnic and career composition. Just over thirty years ago one of my earliest memories was me in the hospital, waiting for my twin sisters to arrive. My memory is hazy since I was only three, but I remember a bright light and two tiny girls, not quite five pounds each, wrapped up in front of me. Excited to have siblings, I leaned over their crib and sang them happy birthday, much to the surprise of my parents. As parents of twins will tell you, they can be a lot of fun, but also quite exhausting. My parents used to dress them alike, but pretty quickly it became apparent that they were individuals with their own minds. One twin was shy and refused to walk unless her hand was held, the other would run head first up and down stairs. Though they are fraternal, they looked so similar that most people outside of the family couldn’t tell them apart until they were in middle school. One became fascinated with fashion while the other trained as an athlete. By high school they had their own friend circles and activities that were completely distinct, yet they were always grouped together as twins for better or for worse.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThey’ve had deep disagreements on account of the lack of space they were given compared to other siblings, but through it all they’ve only managed to keep a close relationship even when their careers and lives took them to different parts of the country. Early in 2020 we found out one was expecting, and then a month later the other! By the end of 2020 they each delivered healthy babies and now share a deeper bond than ever before.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe two violins represent my two sisters, equal in timbre and ability, yet they manage to both play nicely together and disagree when the time is right, propelling the piece forward to new places with the same basic building blocks. Each violin part shares a lot of material with the other, yet they rarely exactly align or agree on what they should do with that material. There are constant interruptions, sudden shifts, and stubborn obsessions with a refusal to budge, yet throughout the work they ultimately come together. The piece starts off with an abundance of syncopation, constantly obscuring a regular pulse, and ends with them playing together in regular time. García Lorca is primarily known as a once in a lifetime poet, playwright, and director, however he began his university studies with a primary focus on music composition and has even penned a number of pieces, including words and music for his \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCanciones españolas antiguas. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMany of his poetry collections are themselves inspired by music, such as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCanciones, Poema del canto jondo, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eand \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRomancero Gitano. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUltimately his talents for literature won out and his creative pursuits received their widest acclaim in his books of plays and poetry. His life and words have inspired dozens of pieces by composers such as Francis Poulenc, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Silvestre Revueltas, George Crumb, Osvaldo Golijov, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Gabriela Lena Frank to name a handful. His life intersected with many other great Spanish artists, including friendships with Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí (whom he pursued romantically, though the feelings were never mutual). His association with composer Manuel de Falla was instrumental in promoting a flamenco festival called El \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eConcurso de Canto Jondo, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eand García Lorca contributed the libretto to an unfinished opera by Manuel de Falla called \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLola, la Comedianta\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. The circumstances of his life, his art, his political activism, his sexuality, and his untimely murder at the hands of fascists will continue to inspire artists for years to come.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI first encountered García Lorca’s work by way of English translations, of which there are many. This cycle was originally set in English while I was a student in San Francisco, and though I enjoyed the process I felt a little as though something was lacking. I revisited this piece recently and reread the poetry in Spanish and found a deep connection to the language and color that I was previously missing, and it felt right to revise them to feature the words as they were originally heard. García Lorca’s poetry is clear and direct; even in his most sensitive moments his choices are bold and command attention from the reader. In \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e¡Ay! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewe are faced with a lonely despair by choice, interrupted by the wind and bonfires on the horizon. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEl gran espejo \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003easks us to look up to the sky and ponder the greatness that is our life and existence. Finally, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCancioncilla del primer beso \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eis a tender celebration of a new love.
